Essential Oil Beginnings

Essential oils have been around for thousands of years as the most effective forms of medicine. The Egyptians were some of the first people to use aromatic essential oils extensively in medical practice, beauty treatment, food preparation, and religious ceremony. Frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, and cinnamon were considered very valuable cargo along caravan trade routes and were sometimes exchanged for gold. Borrowing from the Egyptians, the Greeks used essential oils in their practices of therapeutic massage and aromatherapy. The Romans also used aromatic oils to promote health and personal hygiene. Influenced by the Greeks and Romans, as well as Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic use of aromatic herbs, the Persians began to refine distillation methods for extracting essential oils from aromatic plants. Essential oil extracts were used throughout the dark ages in Europe for their anti-bacterial and fragrant properties.

In the ancient world, essential oils such as Frankincense and Myrrh were actually more valuable than gold and precious metals. They were common gifts given to kings and queens and hence why the three wise men brought these as a gift to the baby Jesus.

In modern times, the powerful healing properties of essential oils were rediscovered in 1937 by a French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who healed a badly burned hand with pure lavender essential oil. He has become known as the “father of aromatherapy” due to his extensive research and study of essential oils and their applications. Dr. Jean Valnet, used therapeutic-grade essential oils to successfully treat injured soldiers during World War II. Dr. Valnet recognized the need for alternatives to medications and antibiotics and for this reason became proficient in application and development of many aromatherapy practices.

Today much research on therapeutic grade essential oils validates their effectiveness as a supplement for use in supporting and strengthening the body in many ways. Many individuals, families and physicians are finding great results in their homes and workplaces. Not only are they complimenting many medical settings, they are giving so many individuals hope once again to be more in control of their health without the negative side effects.
